Westobou
Well, as my first entry here for the ASU Student Diaries, I’ll ramble a bit about the arts and, specifically, music. This year is the inaugural year for the Westobou Festival. The Westobou Festival is yet another great way for the artistically talented the CSRA to share their passions. It starts this Thursday (Sept. 18) and lasts for 10 days. ASU will be participating in the festival in several fields, including visual artists and musicians from the university, as well as playing host to outside presentations.
The first event in which students of ASU will be participating is the yearly Gala Concert, to be held next Wednesday, September 24. The Gala Concert features each of ASU’s musical ensembles, which include the orchestra, choirs, and wind ensemble, among others. As a music major, I’ll be performing in this, namely in the choir for our joint performance (with orchestra) of two wonderful pieces of music; In Windsor Forest by the great Vaughn Williams and Te Deum by Mozart. We (the choir, orchestra, and other ensembles) put so much work into every performance, and this one has been no different. We meet four hours a week (with extra rehearsals closer to concert time) in order to prepare for these concerts.
And here is where I encourage any and all students (as well as their friends and family) to come to the Gala Concert, or to any other performances and showcases done by ASU. We all work our butts off to share a bit of beauty (yes, I know, it’s sappy) with this world, but it’s hard to share it if people aren’t there to witness it.
So, once again, the Westobou Festival officially starts this Thursday (don’t forget to catch Ed Turner & Number 9 at the Augusta Commons), and the ASU Gala Concert is NEXT Wednesday from 7:30pmto 9:30pm. Oh, and it’s free for all ASU students with ID.
