Westobou Festival, Day 1
Today started Westobou Festival! One of the first performances of the festival was the Silk Road Ensemble. You know! The one I blogged about earlier. Well, if you didn’t go you lost out. It has been one of the best performances I’ve been to in a long time. To be honest with you, I’m actually disappointed that more students from the music department didn’t show up. I think I counted about 15 total. 15! But I must say, I rather enjoyed it. The music that was introduced to our community was something you normally don’t hear. I felt that it was well received. The above picture is of one of the instruments used called tablas. There were some conventional string instruments used, such as the violin, viola, and cello but they were used in unconventional ways. The instrumentalists were able to make the instruments cry. Espeicially the cellist! My heart broke. There was another string instrument used that was unfamiliar to me and that was the pipa. It seemed as though it consisted of several more strings than a typical guitar and it was played upright on the lap. It also looked as though it had slots for fingers rather than frets.
I had a video to post, but WordPress and youtube are being difficult so here’s the link! Enjoy and you’re welcome! Silk Road Ensemble encore during Westobou!
