I’m a 48 year old wife and mother of three who graduated from UGA in 1984 with a degree in Journalism. I worked in the field of hospital media for four years, then taught elementary school until 1989 when I became a full time “stay at home” mom. Married to my college sweetheart for 24 years, I’ve been through ten years of medical training and fourteen years of private medical practice with my husband the doctor. In 1999, I began writing feature articles for Augusta Magazine, and I love my part-time job! I’m returning to college this Fall 2010 semester with the twofold purpose of improving my writing skills and obtaining a MAT degree in Secondary Education with English as my content area. My parents were both educators with Master’s degrees and pursuing the same degree has long been a personal goal of mine. I plan to teach English and writing after completing my Master’s degree in 2012.
My oldest daughter is a student at Georgia Southern University and my son began as a freshman at Georgia College and State University the same week I began as a grad student at Augusta State University. My youngest daughter is a very busy eight grader and planning my studies around her schedule is a top priority. Being a good mother became a lifelong responsibility when I decided to have children, and I take fostering their happiness and success very seriously. Fortunately, my children, and my husband are tremendously supportive of my pursuits as a student, but getting used to a mom who has less time for household duties will be a challenge for us all.
My initial experience at ASU has been very, very positive. I researched three other colleges before deciding to attend ASU, and each of the other colleges posed logistical difficulties. Though I only decided to attend ASU in mid- July, the professionals I’ve encountered have guided and assisted me promptly and convinced me that this is definitely where I belong. A few weeks ago, no one knew I was coming to ASU. But now, I’ve encountered as many familiar faces as I have new acquaintances, and doors have been opened in ways that seem more providential than coincidental. Even being invited to write for The ASU Diaries is a surprising opportunity I never anticipated. I think I’m gonna like it here.
