Here we go!

And so I begin my blogs on the day and life of a music student of Augusta State University. As stated in my bio the blogs will also contain photos and videos and so the photos begin. The types of students you’ll find in the Fine Arts Center consist of primarily music students. I don’t understand why the building is donned with the title of “Fine Arts Center” when the lovely Art Department has been moved to Washington Hall. I think it needs to be renamed to represent what it now holds and the Art Department the same. They deserve something better than “Washington Hall”. Maybe that’s a personal soapbox of mine. I’ll now step down and back into the swing of the blog. The talent found in this building ranges from beginning vocalists to the experienced instrumentalist. I honestly love being in the Fine Arts Center and sometimes hearing all kinds of music at once. It shows you have varied we are as human beings.

I guess this is where I introduce myself and give some more background information as well as other things I feel you should take time to look at:
My name is Joshua Medlock. I was born at St. Joseph Hospital on March 8, 1985 around noon, GO PISCES! Though born in Augusta, I was raised in a small town just north of Augusta, Lincolnton. I know that there are some towns smaller than Lincolnton but not much. I mean come on, we had three traffic lights which you could go through all of them by driving in a circle…yeah, it’s small. Lincolnton is a town where everyone knows everyone and everyone thinks they know everyone’s business. Those I started with in Kindergarten are the same ones I graduated with. At 18 I moved to Augusta and have been here ever since. I started classes at Augusta State University in 2003. I took a break from college the fall of 2006 and returned the Spring of 2008. I guess you could say that I was “finding” myself. ha!

“But Josh, how did you get involved in music?” Well, I’m glad you asked. :o ) In the 5th grade, I started taking Piano lessons. When I started the 6th grade, I joined the LCMS Concert Band. I stuck with that up until my Sophomore year of High School when I dropped that and piano and began singing. I found my love! My choral teacher brought me in and nurtured my love of music and music making. I owe a lot of what I know to her. Thanks Mrs. Hobbins!! Upon joining choir, I was also given the chance to participate with the Literary Team in the Boy’s Quartet. Then in my Junior year, I was told about a competition for High School music students. The Georgia Music Educator’s Association All-State Choirs. Only a certain amount of students were accepted into these choirs. With my first go at the competition, I was accepted. I was the first student from Lincoln County High School to participate in a GMEA All-State Choir. That experience changed my life and my love of Choral music grew. Upon graduation of High School, Mrs. Hobbins passed my vocal coaching torch on to her husband, Dr. JW Hobbins with whom I’m studying voice now. He has and is continuing to help develop my voice in this world.

During this time of musical exploration, I was also taking a dip in the musical theater pool. I’ve been in several productions; Wizard of Oz, Oklahoma!, Grease, Anything Goes, Once Upon a Mattress, and Smoke On The Mountain. I’m madly and deeply in love with musical theater. I can’t wait for the spring semester to come so that I can take part in the production of Opera Ensemble’s Oklahoma!.

Wow, I bet that was more than you ever wanted to know! Ok, on with the other stuff. Here are a couple of places on the Internet I think you should take a glance at and some other contact info:
