Finding Things To-do, UNRelated to Formal Education
So, we all know that being in college can be a bit overwhelming. I’d like to think that I’ve found (after 5 and a half years of University life) a way to take a mental break from my regular routine of papers, tests, and the endless reading. For some people that comes with off-campus relationships, going to shows, taking trips, working extra hours, hanging out at coffee shops, etc. For me, I do all of the above AND I’m involved in a Youth Network. Yeah okay… I know. That sounds psychotic. Honestly though, if for no other reason, I’m given the wide open door to be a good example to young people. I get to teach a handful of middle school girls every week (they are hilarious, by the way!), I get to be a creative team director/ event coordinator for Once-a-month Youth events, I get to sing and write songs, I get to teach young musicians and vocalists how to grow musically, and I get to be free from the rigors of studying Physics or US History! You would be amazed, though, at how much education I’ve received at college has dumped itself out into conversations or examples of both good and bad behavior.
Needless to say, I’ve found a life for myself that is full of vibrance and color! I love young people and high schoolers think anyone whose ever set foot on a college campus is automatically cool, so it’s an automatic ego boost. Haha. I do, however, take my role seriously in their lives. I want to be the best version of myself that is humanly possible. I want to know that, as a Christian, when I mess up, they know that I’ve tried to live my life with integrity without sacrificing the fullness and fun! I have a blast in life, and I don’t need intoxicating substances or a slacker attitude or risque escapades to do so. I’d love to say that I never feel left out when that stuff is going on, or when I don’t get invited to the bachelorette parties or, maybe I get invited, but know that I can’t go in good conscious. But we all know that would be a lie. The thing is… Well this is the thing: I’m in love. I’m in love with the God who saves and I’m in love with my work as a youth volunteer. That love wouldn’t allow my heart to be divided between the things of God and right-living, and the things of selfishness and personal pleasures.
I have more than I could ask for. All because I love God and I volunteer.
