Diane Yelvington

Hi! I am Diane Yelvington. I am married with 3 daughters. Ages 30, 18 and 16. Side note: my daughter graduated from ASU with 2 degrees and a minor. I am a non-traditional student. I started my college career 35 years ago. I was within a semester of graduation when something happened and I just couldn’t finish. I was attending school on a swimming scholarship. It made swimming my job and school what I did so I could swim. Not the best way to look at it but that is how it was for me.

Now go forward to just a few years ago. I have a full time job working with elementary students with Autism. I was also working part time coaching a swim team. Had to get “my kid fix” when the schools did not want so many volunteers in the older grades. THEN—I caught the flu, ended up in the hospital and thought I would die. I thought—I don’t want to die without finishing my degree so while I was recuperating I got my act together (paperwork filled out)and my fear (would they let me in) under control and enrolled in ASU.

It has been the best thing! I started with just a couple of classes a semester except during the summer. NOW, this semester I am taking a full load(13 hours) and working my two jobs.. I am spending a lot of weekends riding the bus to swim meets and studying-different than before-but I want people to know they can do it. Time management and someone who can cook at home really helps! Go ASU!
