I was born in Virginia, raised in Florida and I have lived up and down the east coast from Maine to Florida. I am a transplant to Aiken, South Carolina through various moves with my husband’s job. I am 46 years old, married to my wonderful husband, Gene, and I have two sons ages twenty-six and twenty-seven and I am a grandmother. I am a seamstress by trade, and I specialize in bridal and formal wear, but I do all sorts of sewing.

I decided to go back to school in 2007 to get an Education degree however; various things led me in a different direction. In the fall of 2007, I began volunteering and mentoring some young teenage mothers and came in contact for the first time with various social service agencies. Because of the plights of some of these young children, my husband Gene and I decided we would like to become foster parents and possibly help in some small way. Throughout our experiences we were introduced to many situations and circumstances that led me to the decision to change my major to Social Work.

So, after two years at Aiken Technical College and an AA in Human Services I chose ASU for the Social Work program. I have been here a year and my experiences here have been good, different, but good. I see things from a different perspective than many of my classmates, and of course there is that little age difference. I look forward to sharing my thoughts and experiences with the ASU family, and I hope to shed some light on what it is like to navigate through college life as a “non-traditional student”.
