Brown Bag series

Friday as a part of work I attended my first brown bag series event.  I was really impressed.  I hate that I hadn’t participated before now.  In case you don’t know what the brown bag series is it is a seminar where students present their research to faculty and other students.   It wasn’t lame or stuffy.  Two students presented the first one was really interesting to me because I have a math phobia. (yes ASU offers seminars for that too but I have a phobia about that as well J)  The first person invented a calculus program that helps you master the concepts that the teacher is teaching in the classroom.  It was very user friendly and the creator created it from the users view point.  I don’t think I will be brave enough to tackle calculus, but if I do I’m really glad I found out that there is additional help out there for me.

The second person presented a theory about advertising –“Red Bull” was the subject.  He presented a unique perspective that I couldn’t sufficiently present to you here so I won’t even try.

The professors showed their human side, eating pizza alongside students.  I know I didn’t mention in the first paragraph about the pizza, because the series is about the research not the food.  I sure the students presenting were not doing so for pleasure, so keep that in mind when deciding  on whether to drop in or not.  One day it could be you presenting to a empty room, how sad is it to have put all of your time and effort into a project and fellow students don’t even come out to hear you.  So let’s be more supportive of each other.

I know that I for one will try to make it to the next brown bag series.  And just as one last ditch effort to get you there, if it’s Friday your on campus and hungry go grab a slice of pizza during the series.  The only cost of admission is that you might actually learn something that you think is exciting and useful to your college career.

Side Note:

Without rain it’s hard to appreciate the sunshine.

Tiara - Hi, I’m Tiara Jackson. Currently I am a sophomore (1 class shy of being a junior) Public Relations Major. I’m a single mother of one and I am a student worker at ASU. I love ASU because it affords me the opportunity to go to a great school and work without neglecting my duties as a mother. The support that I have found here from faculty, staff, and most of all my fellow students have greatly exceeded any expectations I had before I started at ASU. I could have chosen a school in SC, where I live, but the location and the campus put ASU at the top of my list. I hope that my blog keeps you entertained about the ups, downs, and sideways of being a non traditional student at ASU. Happy reading.

I am really upset about this too. I actually just found out that Augusta State normally only has one graduation. I didn’t know that! I will be graduating in December of next year, and this whole time I’ve been thinking that was when I would get to walk! I am a first generation college student, so I will have earned the right to have my family see me walk across the stage to obtain MY degree as a symbol of achievement. I am so upset too.. because I will be moving six hours away after I graduate next December, and who knows what life will bring to know if I can make it back to walk the following May. It really breaks my heart. I’m so sorry it didn’t work out for you. I’m really praying they will re-think it next year.
