A scholarship can be so meaningful.

In May of 2007, I was riding down the road with my husband and opening the mail; there was an envelope from ASU.

I tore it open, read the first three lines and burst into tears. I could not speak, could not answer my husband’s query about what was wrong. Now you have to understand I have been on the dean’s list more often than not to know why I was ready to hit him when he said “What is the matter? Did you get kicked out of college?” I am thinking ‘thanks alot for that vote of confidence honey!’ Then he pulled off the road, read the letter and he cried also.

The upshot was I had received a scholarship from the Hull College of Business. An ABWA (American Woman Business Association) scholarship in honor of Maydean H. Wells.

The committee who selected me to receive this had no knowledge that she had been a mentor and friend for 16 years before she passed away in 2003. She was a big encourager of education and a founding member of the ABWA in Augusta just after WW2.

I returned to college in the summer of 2005 and here in 2007 it felt as if she was reaching out from the grave to continue to mentor me and encourage me.

This was on mind because it is time to reapply for the scholarship and I still can’t speak of it without choking up.
