An amazing piece
I just absolutely love this violin concerto and hope to play it someday. What is even more interesting about this piece is its composer, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (not to be confused with poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge…though that’s who he was named after!!). Samuel Coleridge-Taylor was a British Romantic composer in the late 1800s/early 1900s…but he was multi-racial. He was born to a Sierra Leonean father and an English mother….who were not married!
This violin concerto was the very last piece that he wrote before his untimely death of pneumonia possibly brought on by exhaustion for this: he had to re-write this violin concerto THREE times!!! The first version of the concerto was not received well and had to be re-written, the second one was lost at sea, so it wasn’t until Coleridge-Taylor’s third try that the piece was finally published and performed. Shortly after its premiere, he passed away.
Hope you all take a listen!
